From September 17 on Sky and NOW Caravaggio arrives in Rome, the journey of the Jubilee a rich and thorough documentary on the spiritual life of Michelangelo Merisi, controversial painter, teacher of light from the always restless soul. Built on the occasion of the Jubilee 2025 and the exhibition “Caravaggio 2025” at Palazzo Barberini, which exhibited for a very high number of visitors twenty-four masterpieces of the master, the documentary Caravaggio in Rome. The journey of the Jubilee, first seen on Sky Art on September 17 at 21.15, streaming only on NOW and also available on demand, offers an unpublished portrait investigating his tormented relationship with faith and his desperate search for papal forgiveness, after the death sentence for a murder committed in Rome and forced him to flee to Naples, Sicily, Malta.
Directed by Giovanni Piscaglia on the subject of Didi Gnocchi and screenplay by Eleonora Angius, the documentary, in the background of the crowded capital of pilgrims, traces a parallel between Rome where Caravaggio found the consecration in the Jubilee of 1600 with the Vocation and the Martyrdom of San Matteo, and the contemporary one. The film recounts the evolution of the artist, as a painter of daily scenes to interpret an intense, dramatic and charged faith of humanity, until his tragic death on a journey to Rome, in search of the grace never obtained.
