Before becoming one of the most sought after criminals in the United States, Ted Kaczynski was a young prodigy of mathematics at Harvard. It is from this transformation that starts Unabomber, the new Netflix film directed by Janus Metz, available on the platform since 25 September 2026. In the role of the young Kaczynski is Jacob Tremblay, while Russell Crowe plays Professor Henry Murray.
The film tells a story really happened and follows two different moments of Kaczynski’s life: on the one hand the university years and the psychological experiments to which he is subjected to Harvard, on the other the long investigation that will bring the FBI on its tracks. The film does not follow only the search for the criminal, but tries to tell how a young talent of mathematics has come to turn into the Unabomber, keeping the comparison between past and present as the central structure of the story.
La trama
The story begins with young Ted Kaczynski, a math student at Harvard. Equipped with capacity outside the commune, Kaczynski is involved in psychological experiments conducted by Professor Henry Murray, a figure really existed and interpreted in the film by Russell Crowe. The story follows the progressive transformation of the boy and alternates the years of his formation with the moment when, by now adult, he became the man known as Unabomber.
Ten years later, manhunt involves FBI agent Joanne Miller, played by Shailene Woodley. The investigation reveals the past of Kaczynski and allows to reconstruct the path that led him to become responsible for a long campaign of bomb attacks.
The film takes inspiration from the real story of Theodore Kaczynski, responsible for a campaign of attacks with ordnances sent by mail for several years. Hunting at Unabomber was one of the most important investigative operations in FBI history.

Il cast
Jacob Tremblay plays Kaczynski in his youth. The actor told that he did not know in detail the story of the future Unabomber before accepting the role and trying to avoid a caricature representation of the character, focusing instead on his human dimension.
Russell Crowe instead dresses Henry Murray’s shoes, Harvard psychology professor involved in experiments that mark an important stage in Kaczynski’s life.
Shailene Woodley plays FBI agent Joanne Miller, in charge of hunting Kaczynski. In the cast there are also Annabelle Wallis, Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg and Marc Menchaca.
