A psychological thriller who also had the approval of Stephen King, directed by an acclaimed director like Chilean Pablo Larrain, adaptation of the literary universe of Argentine writer Mariana Enriquez, arrives on Netflix Mis Muertos Tristes – My Sad Dead, miniseries in 4 unexpected episodes and ready to intercept the author. A woman able to see the dead, a grandson who arrives in her life and a series of murders that seems to break definitively the border between living and dead, starts from here this miniseries that has been presented world premiere at the 74th edition of the Festival of San Sebastián, where she was inserted in the official competition in a film version of 187 minutes. The bets will be available on September 24th.

La trama di Mis muertos tristes

The protagonist is Ema, a newly retired doctor who has a special capacity: he can see the dead. However, it is not a gift for her to use, as a burden she has long lived with.

Ema is trying to process her mother’s death and deal with some unresolved issues of her past when her grandson Julie arrives. At the same time, in the district of Piedrabuena, an area marked by violence and abandonment, three teenagers are killed. Something changes from that moment.

The presences that Ema had learned to consider part of her everyday life begin to manifest to the other inhabitants of the neighborhood. What seemed to be a personal experience is transformed into a collective phenomenon and the boundary between the world of living and that of the dead becomes more and more fragile.

Dai racconti di Mariana Enriquez alla serie

Mis muertos sads is not the simple transposition of a single story, starting from the homonymous text of Mariana Enriquez and incorporates elements, characters and situations from other stories of the writer, including Julie, Un lugar soleado para gente sombría e Cuando hablábamos con los muertos.

The adaptation was made by Mariana Enriquez herself, with Guillermo Calderón, Anastasia Ayazi and Pablo Larraín. The goal was to build a unique story by bringing together different elements of the writer’s narrative universe, keeping the themes of abandonment, violence and social wounds at the centre. So the supernatural becomes a tool to talk about a concrete reality. Ghosts are not just horror creatures, but they represent a memory that comes back and situations that have not been resolved.

For Larraín, director of films like Jackie, Spencer, El Conde and Maria, Mis muertos sads represents an immersion in the horror genre through a story deeply linked to the Argentine social reality. The series was filmed between Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile and uses the supernatural to tell a community crossed by violence, poverty and loneliness.

Il cast di Mis muertos tristes

To play Ema is Mercedes Morán, while Dolores Fonzi dresses Julie’s shoes. In the main cast there are also Alejandra Flechner and Carolina Alvarez. The cast includes Carlos Portaluppi, Germán de Silva and Luz Jiménez.

The photograph is by Sergio Armstrong, a historical collaborator of Larraín, while the production is entrusted to Fabula, the production house founded by Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín.
