M. Il Figlio del Secolo la trama

M. The son of the Century begins with the founding of the Italian Fascis in 1919 until Mussolini’s speech after the murder of socialist congressman Giacomo Matteotti in 1925. In addition to politics will be told the private life of the dictator, his relationship with his wife Rachele and that with the lover Margherita Sarfatti. Like the novel, the series will describe a country that surrendered to the dictatorship and the history of a man who is reborn several times.

M – Il figlio del secolo, le prime due puntate

On 23 March 1919 Mussolini founded the Fasci di Combattimento, the movement that embodies its revolutionary political creed. But the conquest of consensus is far away: the first Fascis are only a few hundred war veterans, crippled and desperate; and someone steals the scene: the poet and war hero D’Annunzio takes militarily Rijeka. So Mussolini jumps into the elections: the old socialist comrades win, now enemies, he does not take votes and is arrested.

Resigned free from defeat, Mussolini tries to leave politics. But an unexpected occasion makes him change his mind: the strikes induced by the socialists, who paralyze the country, induce latifundists and industrialists to seek the help of the bundles to restore order with force. Fascism, born to raise the last, denies workers and peasants and embraces the cause of the bosses and bourgeois. And thanks to the new allies he enters parliament.

Puntate 3 e 4

The episodes 3 and 4 close the first part of the series, the most grotesque, more guascona, more circense. In a country marked by classes in struggle, Mussolini’s strategy is to nurture disorders and violence, destabilize institutions and then offer itself as the only one able to return the order and hold its black shirts. But when it comes to stopping violence for real, the fascists turn against him.

The violence of black shirts terrifies institutions. Mussolini understands that instead of stopping it is the time to exploit it to the bottom, and threatens an armed uprising if it will not get a strong fascist presence in the government. Under the threat of a revolt that has no chance of succeeding Mussolini gets even more: he becomes head of the government.

5-6

Bets 5 and 6 open the darkest phase. Mussolini is in power but that power is not enough. He wants new elections with a new electoral law that assures him a overwhelming majority in parliament. Don Sturzo, head of the Catholic party, tries to disembark his way but Mussolini in exchange for concessions to the Church gets its kick out. The law passes, Mussolini is enough for a quarter of the votes to have absolute power.

To ensure the election victory Mussolini opens the lists of the fascist party to politicians of any formation. While being re-elected in many, they abandon their own parties to climb the safe winner’s carriage. But a charismatic and authoritative fascist leader rebels in the name of the purity of the movement: Mussolini, fearing to lose his vote, makes him slaughter in bastonate.

7-8

The episodes 7 and 8 reveal close the series and open to dictatorship. The elections were a success: parliament is almost all black. The Socialist MP Matteotti, however, denounces violence and fraud by black shirts, calls for the annulment of the elections and prepares to reveal a serious case of corruption involving Mussolini himself. Mussolini orders Matteotti to be stopped. Matteotti is killed and his cloaked body.

The disappearance of Matteotti first, and the finding of the body then, upset the country. The investigation shows the direct involvement of the Duce’s trusted men in the crime. Fascism and its boss seem a step away from the end.
