Champagne – Peppino di Capri, la trama

Champagne is not only the story of the life of Peppino of Capri, who has made the whole generations dance and fall in love, from childhood during the war to affirmation as a complete and mature musician in the early 1970s, but a journey through fundamental decades for the history of our country, without neglecting the most intimate and fragile side of man.

Giuseppe Faiella, the real name of Peppino of Capri, began his musical career in 1943, just four years old, when in a completely instinctive way – he owns the gift of absolute ear – performs for American soldiers stationed in Capri. It is immediately evident that music is the way it intends to take, as a teenager.

Leave Capri and, thanks also to the intuition for innovation and the search for new sounds, wins the contest of the program Rai “First Applause”. The success and the 1950s marked for him the beginning of a great career with the name Peppino di Capri (played by actor and singer Francesco Del Gaudio). In the 1960s Peppino met a young and enterprising wearer, Roberta, the first love that accompanies him – and gave him inspiration for the song – during the years of artistic consecration.

They get married and the relationship oscillates between ups and downs, almost in parallel with the changes of an era that, at the end of the 1960s, alongside the enthusiasms for the twist, preferring songwriters and political commitment. The turbulent relationship with Roberta turns out when Peppino’s career seems to be at the end of the line: the records demand new things, almost boycott it. For the first time Peppino seems to have lost contact with the public and with himself, but finds the strength to rise up.

Thanks to Bebè’s encouragement, his best friend and drummer since the first performances, to the new love for Giuliana, a biologist away from the world of show, and to a earned maturity, he founded his record company and, after having hired Franco Califano to compose “A great love and nothing more”, he won for the first time the Sanremo Festival in 1973.
