In recent years, the expression ‘body horror’ is seeing some inflation, being shaken on the screen appears something slightly more crude than the canon bullet or stabbing. Here comes Coralie Fargeat, reminding us that no, the horror body is a whole other story: his second feature film The Substance is at the center of a vortex of online and offline discussions. And it is immediately cult. The film after the success at the cinema, the awards won are in the first sight this evening, Wednesday 14 October on Rai 4.
The Substance: voi cosa fareste per essere perfetti?
Elisabeth Sparkle was a Hollywood star now reduced to conducting aerobic programs on TV, and the network wants to replace it also from that. It is now at the threshold of the fifty, and the public looks for a younger face: Los Angeles is a blender, and always wants fresh meat. To take away from it comes the substance, a miracle drug (or infernal? ) that promises to activate another version of itself: young, sexy, better. And so Sue is born, alter ego of Elisabeth who begins to recover all that time has taken away from her: the tv program, the sex appeal, the attention of the world. The treatment with the Substance, however, requires that Elisabeth and Sue alternate a week by head, without exception and without delay, because everything proceeds without unexpected. A seemingly easy task until the two halves compete..
Body talk
The Substance is not spared and does not forgive: it addresses the theme of the body without means terms, without softening the most macabre and merciless implications for any segment of the population. His gaze is at the same time deeply personal and brilliantly social, and the cinematography holds a bang. The look of the camera is surgical: look at the bodies of the protagonists in a way that lets us feel the desire of the world around them, without ever being part of it.
Orrore overdrive
As should be clear from the previous paragraph, I think The Substance is a great film: full of nuances in thematic exploration (you will think about it for days) beautiful to see, ritmato da Dio. The Substance is also, however, an incredibly unpleasant experience: for years I was so physically uncomfortable while watching a movie, and, among nervous laughter, damps and people who covered their eyes, the rest of the room was in similar conditions. But if you have a body, maybe it’s worth taking courage and going to the movies.
Il cast
Demi Moore is Elisbeth Sparkle, a television personality whose star is declining, while Margaret Qualley is Sue, her alter-ego after taking the Substance. Dennis Quaid is Harvey, viscido and venale director of the network, while Yann Bean is the mysterious voice on the phone that drives Elisabeth in the use of Substance.
