North South East, the review: the 883 story continues to excite

There is a first and one after Romanzo Criminal in Italian seriality. Similarly they killed the spider man – The legendary 883 story set a new standard. If in 2008 Sky with Cattleya had changed the perspective of crimes, today with the two seasons of the 883 history did so with comedies or dramedy. Despite all Sky continues to bring to the public the best Italian serial products in circulation, finding the way to expand, making it more popular without ever losing quality.

It was not easy to continue the story of the 883, because the first season had taken a story that perhaps no one imagined could become a TV series and transformed it into the manifest product of the millennials, of who today is 40 years (or little more or less) and lived those years ’90 that are increasingly coming back to the limelight. But not only, he was able to tell the life of the province, the slow flow of days, the dreams that are born suddenly, the friendships that bloom when you least expect it. Max and Mauro are not only 883 but they have become two like all of us, who seek (they have searched, they will always search for) their place in the world.

North South East is a circle that closes. Without having seen the eighth episode that was kept hidden from the previewed visions and which did not even vaguely mention during the presentation, I feel to say that this second season is a fully successful product. The first North South East episode will probably divide the audience because it might seem like an attempt to stretch the broth, a force to try something different, but in the end it does nothing but to reiterate all the central theme of the series, which is not so much the story of a historical group that made cult songs, as well as the story of a friendship.

The representation of what should be the friendship between real people, disinterested and who protect each other. In a world of sharks, of arrivals, of those who try to find a way to defeat the other, Mauro and Max always take a step back. It does not mean giving up, it is not a sign of weakness, but it embodies the ability to cope with the other, to love in the fullest and absolute sense of the term. And there is a phrase, which I do not spoil, of course, which says (or better think) Mauro in the final of the seventh episode that embodies all this and that digs a groove even in the hardest hearts.

There are some aspects of narrative exaggerations and on the other side of simplifications that can sometimes melt and above all be redundant after the first season. However, not such as to affect the ability to make the characters feel natural and true. Even everything that can be forced at first sight, ends up having a clearly functional sense to the goal of the story. The construction of the individual bets is flawless even though quite linear. One aspect not to be underestimated (and is often forgotten) is the desire not to lose time consistency.

Needless to underline the skill in breathing those years ’90, the choice of references, quotes, scenes that make perfectly the life of adolescents, young adults of that period. Good actors, but besides Elia Nuzzolo and Matteo Oscar Giuggioli deserve a mention of honor surely Davide Calgaro and Edoardo Ferrario. North South East closes chapter 883 but it’s hard not to imagine that Greenland, Matteo Rovere, Sydney Sibilia and Sky are not already thinking about a way to maintain this magical atmosphere and chase the dramedy (spering without abusing it as done with crime in the past). Maybe there’s some connections in the mysterious eighth episode? Spoiler non spoiler, if it was over with the seventh no one would have had anything to laugh because that bet ending is perfect even for a conclusion.
