Treasure Island – Treasure Island becomes a TV series on MGM+ with David Oyelowo and Hayley Atwell

The famous adventure novel by Robert Louis Stevenson The Treasure Island – Treasure Island returns to the small screen with a new version that focuses not only on treasure hunting, but also on power relations, secrets and choices that mark the growth of the young protagonist. Treasure Island debuts on Sunday, October 11, 2026 on MGM+, available in Italy as a subscription channel on Prime Video and Mediaset Infinity. The series consists of six episodes and proposes a rereading of the classic with a cast that includes David Oyelowo, Hayley Atwell, Tom Sweet and Jack Huston.

Filming took place between Bristol, the UK, and Tenerife, Spain. The two settings helped to recreate the world of pirate adventure told by Robert Louis Stevenson, alternating British scenarios and island landscapes suitable for sea events. The production was produced by Playground, in collaboration with MGM+ and Fifth Season, with production services in Spain entrusted to Ánima Stillking.

La trama

The story follows Jim Hawkins, a teenager who lives with his mother Bess and leads a relatively protected existence until the discovery of a mysterious map changes everything. The document leads to the legendary treasure of Captain Flint and drags mother and son into a dangerous adventure, in which the promise of extraordinary wealth is accompanied by rivalry and threats.
To reach the treasure, Jim and Bess board on Hispaniola, where they meet Long John Silver, a charismatic and ambiguous sailor, interested in the same wealth. The crossing gradually turns into a struggle for the control of the expedition, while alliances become fragile and the risk of mutiny grows. Jim must learn to recognize the intentions of those around him and to make increasingly difficult decisions, on a path that will force him to abandon the naivety of adolescence. The series also expands the role of Bess Hawkins, a determined woman who does not merely accompany her son, but actively participates in the research and strategies needed to survive.

Treasure Island Cast e personaggi

The cast brings together interpreters already known to the international public, called to give a new form to the characters of the novel. Here are the main actors and roles announced:

The series is developed for television by Robert Murphy, already author of Vera and Shetland. The project aims to preserve the fundamental elements of Stevenson’s adventure, giving more space to the family dimension and the conflicts between the characters.

I precedenti

The novel The Treasure Island, published by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1883 after appearing in a magazine, has been adapted numerous times for cinema and television. Among the most famous versions is the 1950 Disney film directed by Byron Haskin and starring Bobby Driscoll in the role of Jim Hawkins and Robert Newton in Long John Silver. In 1972, another film transposition came, directed by John Hough and Andrea Bianchi, with Orson Welles in the cast, while in 1990 Charlton Heston directed and played a television version with Christian Bale, then very young, as Jim. Most recent is the 2012 British miniseries directed by Steve Barron, with Toby Regbo and Eddie Izzard respectively in the roles of Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver. The world of the novel also inspired animated productions, including the Japanese series Takarajima of 1978 and the Italian one of 2015.
